Monday 17th DecTues 8th - Period 2 - Using a PAst Exam Paper to revise

LEARNING OBJECTIVE: To revise exam style questions

SUCCESS CRITERIA: You will gain your target grade in the paper or discover what are your main areas for revision.

LESSON: Hand out calculator past paper and encourage students to first read all questions and mark the ones they know they can do. Also underline/highlight and key words in the questions. Take 10 mins to do this.

Then let them start answering questions - as much on their own as possible, but where necessary allow discussion with staff or peers.

PLEANRIES: Copies of the mark scheme are available for students to self mark their own answers.

SUCCESS CRITERIA: You will have a better knowledge of  areas you were tested on and be aware of what areas you need to revise.

ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITY: Hand back marked scripts to students for them to look at discuss/question...

1. Students to fill in the front cover of their test sheets analysing the individual questions on the test
2. Students to add this test result to their flight path sheet in folder
3. Work through the questions in the test, encourage students to make notes / copy model answers into their text books.
4. Ensure test and flight paths sheet are returned to Maths Folder for storage

LEARNING OBJECTIVE: Consolidate knowledge of squares/square roots and cubes/cube roots.
SUCCESS CRITERIA: YOu will know off by heart squares and square roots of numbers up to 15 and cubes and cube roots of numbers up to 5

ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITY: Take a laptop - 1 between 2 people and logon onto Mymaths web site.

In your pair see how many moves it takes to complete the board.

Pres f5 to refresh the game and see if you can complete it in less moves.

Sept 6th - Squares, Cubes and indices

LEARNING OBJECTIVE: To work out and learn squares up to 15 sqaured and cubes up to 10 cubed.
To understand how to expand, combine and simplify power numbers

SUCCESS CRITERIA: You will know the squares of all numbers up to 15 squared and cubes up to 10 cubed.

ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITY:

LESSON: Hand out Blank Cards and Explain to Students how to put A number squared on one side and the answer to the number squared on the reverse side. A few examples on board.

TASK 1: Complete all fifteen cards for 12 up to 152



Now spend 10 mins with a partner using the cards to learn the answers to any that you do not already know.

With Some groups show how to add Square root and a solution to the cards in a different colour and try to learn them

TASK 2: Take another five cards and repeat the exercises but with the first five cubes, 13, 23, 33, 43, 53. Again
 use the cards to try and learn the first five cube numbers, and the first five cube roots.

PLENARIES: Helping students / tables of students with the exercise and giving individuals/pairs ideas of how to use their cards to learn them.

EXTENSION: Using Index Notation to simplify expressions and multiplying index numbers together

LEARNING OBJECTIVE: Understand the basics of the metric system and be able to convert between the more common measures of length (mm, cm, m and Km)
SUCCESS CRITERIA: You will understand how the basics of the metric system and will be able to convert between mm, cm, m and kms
ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITY: Using the table of measurements I have given you (and is on page 430) decide which metric unit you would use to measure the 15 items in Ex 20A on page 431 – Check answers / discussion

Fri 18th May - Test review and Analysis

LEARNING OBJECTIVE: TO review the test results and look at some model answers to some of the questions
SUCCESS CRITERIA: You will understand why you got questions wrong, and know how to get them correct in the next test.
STARTER: Hand out test results and give students time to talk about, ask questions their results
LESSON: Show them the grades that their results are worth and then spend time going through questions on the exam papers – encourage them to come to IWB and do the explaining where possible.
Use exercise books and test papers to write down explanations and model answers to questions
PLENARY: Write down ONE topic to revise before the end of next week, for me to set a homework on.

Once all fractions sections have been completed successfully you can move onto the work on directed numbers

STARTER: Students collect their folders and work folders along with a laptop if they need one. They take out there checklist to see what they have to do next.

LESSON: Students test themselves using MyMaths tasks at the beginning of a section and then work through some activities and test again at end to see if progress has been made.

PLENARY: Students complete their log sheets in folders. Write down a sum from todays work to test yourself at the beginning of tomorrows lesson

LEARNING OBJECTIVE: To revise level G & number work AND Fractions Work

SUCCESS CRITERIA: You will be able to solve level G/F number & Fractions problems


STARTER: Hand out the Topic List and explain how we are going to use it to keep track of where they are. Fill in table for all exercises completed so far.- - Date them January 2012

Put todays date against the topic they are going to work through today

LESSON: Students continue working through the text book on their topic.

Remember to mark own work from answers in back of text book. Support students at their tables.

PLENARY: Checking students work in their books, supporting them with any weaknesses or problems

LEARNING OBJECTIVE: To revise level G (and some F) number work, focussing on number work.

SUCCESS CRITERIA: You will be able to solve level G/F number problems
You will be confident and well practiced with all of the following number problems

  • Adding in grids – all completed
  • All times tables up to 10's
  • Multiplying and dividing by 10, 100, 1000
  • BODMAS
  • Understand Place Value
  • Round numbers to nearest 10, 100, 1000
  • Adding and subtracting up to 4 digits using column method
  • Multiplying and dividing by single digits
  • Representing Fractions
  • Adding/Subtracting Fractions with same denominator
  • Equivalent Fractions
  • Adding/Subtracting Fractions with different denominators

STARTER:
Times it out – play as a class and then freeze IWB and get individuals to play for 5 mins each throughout the lesson

Continue to work through Chapter 5 & then Chapter 6 of text book you MUST Complete ALL questions in an exercise before you move on

LEARNING
OBJECTIVE: Revision of number topics using results / corrections from test

SUCCESS
CRITERIA: You will be able to complete Level F&G number work

STARTER: Hand out tests give students 5 mins to look at/compare and talk about the tests.

LESSON: Hand out test questions again to go with the test, students are to complete all corrections and missing questions from the test.

Should anyone complete all these tasks they have to then continue working through text book

PLENARY: Checking all answers, working with individuals and small groups at tables.
